Odds
This very well could be the most sought after section of the site. Here you will find the latest odds on the fight game, not only from the numerous offshore books (online), but also right from the heart of it all...Vegas baby!
Below you will see each fighters name and information along with the current odds at the various books. You should use these tools to shop around and find the very best place to slap your bet down.
Here is a quick tutorial on how to read fight lines. Let’s use the odds from the Fernando Vargas vs. Ricardo Mayorga fight as an example.
Fernando Vargas -170
Ricardo Mayorga +150
The two lines you see above are for straight bets only. A straight bet simply means that your fighter (the one you bet on) must win the fight. It does not matter how he wins (decision, ko, etc) he simply must win for you to be paid!
Another positive benefit of betting a fighter on the money line, or straight bet, is should the bout be declared a draw, you would have your bet refunded on a straight bet (Please note, all books do not follow this rule. Some books will actually grade a straight bet as a loss should the bout be declared a draw. It is very important to shop around and find a book that offers the most favorable terms to the bettor.) If you picked any fighter props (see section below for fighter prop explanations) you would lose in the event of a draw.
The fighter that has a + sign next to his name is the underdog (in this case Mayorga.) The number next to the + sign is the amount you win if you bet $100. Of course you don’t have to bet $100, you can bet less if you wish.
Example: Ricardo Mayorga is +150. If you bet $100 on Mayorga and he wins, you get $150 back for your bet on Mayorga at +150, plus your original $100 bet, for a grand total of $250. Now, only $150 of that is pure profit, but you will get a total ticket payout of $250.
The fighter that has a - sign next to his name is the favorite (in this case Vargas.) The number next to the - sign is the amount you must bet in order to win $100. Of course you don’t have to bet $100, you can bet less if you wish.
Example: Fernando Vargas -170. If you bet $170 on Vargas and he wins, you get $100 back for your bet on Vargas at -170, plus your original $170 bet, for a grand total of $270. Now, only $100 of that is pure profit, but you will get a total ticket payout of $270.
We quickly covered what it means to place a straight wager on a fighter, but you may also see over/under round props placed on certain fights. We will once again use the Vargas/Mayorga fight lines as an example.
Under 9.5 rounds -160
Over 9.5 rounds +140
Over/Under fight props are just that, you pick the over in the fight or the under in the fight. Basically, when you bet on an O/U you are trying to decide if you think somebody will get stopped before the round prop hits (in this case 9.5 rounds) or if they will make it past the round prop line.
In this case the line is set at 9.5 rounds. That would read as 9 full rounds, and 1:30 seconds into the 10th round (half of round 10.) Should you decide you feel this fight will not make it to the 1:30 mark of round ten, then you would play the under in the bout and lay -160 to win $100. If you feel that both fighters will still be standing after 1:30 seconds of the tenth round, then you would only need to bet $100 to get $140 back on your bet.
Now, the odds on prop bets pay the same as straight bets (+ is the underdog and - is the favorite.) The biggest difference between this over/under bet and a straight bet is... you do not care who wins the fight! You are not betting on a particular fighter to win, you are only betting on the fight going the round prop line (9.5 in this case) or not going the round prop line.
If for example, you bet over 9.5 rounds in this fight (1:30 seconds into round 10) and Vargas gets knocked out after that 1:30 mark into the round, you don't care, you already won! As long as this fight goes 1:30 seconds into round ten (you actually need 1:31 to cash your ticket, if it ended on exactly the 1:30 seconds mark it would be a push and your bet would be refunded) you are good to go.
It is very important to make sure that you understand the official time of the bout will be read by the announcer. IT IS NOT THE TIME YOU SEE ON YOUR TV! Many people get upset when going by the TV clock only to hear a different time announced by the announcer. The announcer gets the official time from the timekeeper at the fight. The time he reads at the end of the fight is what the books will use when deciding the winner on an O/U prop bet.
OK, now we have covered straight bets (picking a fighter to win) and O/U bets (we don't care who wins we only want our over or under to come in.) but we are not done yet!
Along with the above betting options, you will also sometimes see fighter prop bets. Basically, a fighter prop bet is picking a fighter to win in a certain way.
Vargas by KO +120
Vargas by Decision +400
Mayorga by KO +215
Mayorga by decision +760
In the above examples you will see Vargas listed by knockout at +120, and by decision at +400. We already discussed the payouts earlier, and fighter prop bets are paid out just as the other bets we have discussed.
This is a real easy bet to follow. If we bet Vargas by knockout, then he must knockout Mayorga for us to win this bet. If he beats Mayorga by decision and we bet Vargas by knockout we lose our bet! The only way for us to win our bet is for Vargas to stop Mayorga before the final bell rings to end the fight.
When you bet a KO prop like this, any type of stoppage for your guy is a winner. If Mayorga gets cut from a punch in the fight and the doctor stops it... you win. If Mayorga injures his shoulder and cannot continue... you win. If Mayorga low blows Vargas and gets disqualified... you win. A KO prop always includes the KO, TKO and DQ!
The opposite of the KO prop is the decision prop. If we take Vargas by decision the only way for us to win the fight is if Vargas beats him on the scorecards. Any other outcome will be a loss for us. Now, there is one exception to this rule. If Vargas and Mayorga are fighting and they are past the fourth round, and either fighter accidentally gets cut from a headbutt, with one or both fighters being unable to continue, they will go to the scorecards and render a winner by technical decision.
If Vargas were to be ahead after four rounds on the scorecards you will still get paid on the Vargas decision. It would go into the books as a technical decision win for Vargas. If this headbutt caused a cut before four rounds were complete and either fighter could not continue, it would be ruled a no contest and ALL bets on the fight would be refunded.
The above information goes for Mayorga as well. If you bet on Mayorga's fighter props instead of Vargas, all you have to do is switch their names around and the scenarios play out the same.
Usually when fighter props are placed, a draw prop will also be out. A draw bet is simply a bet that the fight will end in a draw. Any other result is a loss.
The very last type of betting option you will usually see is called a round prop bet. These props are not very common and are usually reserved for major fights.
Vargas wins in round 1 +1800
Vargas wins in round 2 +1800
Vargas wins in round 3 +1600
Vargas wins in round 4 +1500
Vargas wins in round 5 +1500
Vargas wins in round 6 +1500
Vargas wins in round 7 +1500
Vargas wins in round 8 +1500
Vargas wins in round 9 +1600
Vargas wins in round 10 +1800
Vargas wins in round 11 +2200
Vargas wins in round 12 +2800
Mayorga wins in round 1 +2500
Mayorga wins in round 2 +2200
Mayorga wins in round 3 +2200
Mayorga wins in round 4 +2200
Mayorga wins in round 5 +2000
Mayorga wins in round 6 +2000
Mayorga wins in round 7 +2000
Mayorga wins in round 8 +2200
Mayorga wins in round 9 +2500
Mayorga wins in round 10 +2800
Mayorga wins in round 11 +3000
Mayorga wins in round 12 +3500
Round prop betting is just that... betting on the round. If you like Vargas to stop Mayorga in the first round of the fight you could bet "Vargas wins in round one" and get +1800odds. That means, for every $100 you bet you would win $1800! The biggest disadvantage to this prop bet is that it's only good for the single round you bet. If Vargas stops Mayorga in the second round, and you bet Vargas wins in round 1,3,5,9,10 but did not bet Vargas wins in round two, you would lose all of your other round prop bets! In fact, even if you happen to pick Vargas in round two and won that bet, you still lose any other round prop bets that you have placed.
It is important to remember that once you make your bet, you are locked in at those odds. Meaning, if you bet an underdog at +150 and then a few days go by and a lot of other folks also bet the underdog, his odds will drop. In other words the +150 may look like +125 after more and more money comes in on him. (Remember, what causes lines to change is when a lot of money is bet on a particular fighter.) People betting on him as his odds slowly drop, will earn less if he wins then you will, having locked him in at +150.
Of course this can work the other way too. If more money comes in on your opponent, then your fighters’ odds will rise. Just remember that the timing of your bet is also important. Watch the lines for a few days leading up to a fight and then jump in when you see a good number.
These odds will be updated on a regular basis. The Vegas odds will probably be updated once a week, with online odds being updated daily. You must bookmark this page and check back multiple times a day if you wish to see how the lines are moving.
Without question you will want to spend a large part of your fight nights (day really) here at Fight Junkie checking out the line movements on the fights. On TV bouts, the lines can really shift quickly come fight night. Not to mention, prop bets usually come out the day of the fight and cannot be posted until then.
We would also like to invite you to check out our Fight Junkie predictions page for Fight Junkie picks and opinions on upcoming matches. If you are craving more information, you can always head on over to our forum and check out the dedicated section just for bettors!
